June is National Safety Month
Since its establishment by the National Safety Council in June 1996, organizations and individuals across the country have come together to join the National Safety Council in observance of National Safety Month, a dedication each June to bring extra attention to the safety issues faced at the workplace or any place.
But Safety Month should not just be observed at the workplace but in every aspect of our lives. Safety is and should always be at the forefront of what we do at home, work, and play.
There are three key factors when making the most of your safety program either at home, work, or at play; choice, culture, and communication.
Choice: Safety should always be a top priority in every aspect of our lives. It is crucial to be motivated to choose safety before engaging in any activity. The reward of completing a task without any injuries is a testament to a job well done. These small acts of ensuring safety contribute to our well-being and play a significant role in our daily lives, whether at home, at work, or during recreational activities. Continue to prioritize safety for a fulfilling and rewarding experience in all that you do.
Culture: In light of your commitment to prioritizing safety in all aspects of life – at home, work, and during leisure activities – you are now better positioned to cultivate a culture centered around achievements in safety. Whether it’s completing a new deck installation, or successfully maintaining a safe work environment for 100 hours without any OSHA violations, it’s essential to celebrate these milestones. Consider organizing recognition lunches, providing monetary bonuses, and offering immediate rewards to acknowledge and reinforce safe practices. By fostering a sense of accomplishment and providing time to appreciate these achievements, you are actively solidifying a culture of safety across all areas of your life.
Communication: Embracing safety goes beyond just following rules and guidelines; it involves actively communicating its importance to those around us. By sharing with important people in our lives that safety is a priority, we create a culture where everyone is invested in maintaining a safe environment. Engaging in discussions about safety techniques and celebrating the successful completion of projects in a safe manner helps reinforce the value of safety in our everyday lives. Foster open communication about safety to ensure the well-being of ourselves and those around us.
Remember, safety is a collective responsibility that starts with embracing the three C’s approach. Whether it’s at home, work, or during recreational activities, adopting and implementing these key factors can significantly enhance safety measures. By making informed choices, fostering a safety-oriented culture, and maintaining open lines of communication, individuals can proactively safeguard themselves and others from potential risks and hazards.
